Mardy Fish’s compatriot, John Isner, has defeated Kevin Anderson of South Africa in the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2012. Isner won the match by 7-6(3), 6-7(8), 7-6(7).
It was a mighty close match and could have gone either way. But, Isner was terrific in the tie breaker of the third set. He saved three match points and pulled off a great victory. The match went on for 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Neither of the two players managed to get even a single breakthrough in the entire match. All the three sets were decided in the tie breaker. In the tie breaker of the first set, the scores were levelled at 2-2 at one point of time, but, thereafter, Anderson lost the plot and lost the next five points on the trot.
In the 11th game of the second set, Anderson got three breakpoints, but, he wasn’t able to take advantage of any of them and the second set went into the tie breaker as well.
In the tie breaker of the second set, both the players fought very hard and the score was levelled at 8-8 before Anderson won two points consecutively to win the second set.
Anderson was ahead in the tie breaker of the final set as well. But, he again missed the opportunities and allowed Isner to run away with the match.
After winning the match, Isner said, “It was really a very interesting match. Both of us served brilliantly. It was the closest match that I have ever played in my career. I was a bit nervous towards the end, but, luckily, I managed to save those match points and then, won the match eventually.”
In the third round, Isner will play against Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic.
