GIGI FERNANDEZ NAMED NEW YORK EMPIRE COACH

Two time Olympic Gold Medalist and International Tennis Hall of Famer, Gigi Fernandez was recently named the head coach for the second-year franchise of the New York Empire presented by Citi.


The franchise would play on Court 17 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

The legendary tennis player who won a total of 17 Grand Slam doubles titles during her professional career that spanned from the year 1983 to 1997 currently is the only female coach in Mylan World TeamTennis.

With the New York Empire holding the first pick, she would immediately be placing much of her focus on the March 14th Mylan WTT Roster Draft. John Isner, Mardy Fish and Eugenie Bouchard had also previously been acquired and announced by the team as part of the league’s Marquee Draft.

Speaking about the upcoming season and the additions made to the team, Fernandez believes that it was yet going to be a fantastic summer for the team.

“This is going to be a fantastic summer for the New York Empire with a really strong team that already includes John, Genie and Mardy,” said Fernandez.

The Puerto Rico-native also noted that they had to endeavor that the remainder of the roster was finalized and their attention was shifted to match strategy.

“We’ll finalize the remainder of the roster very soon and then it’s time to start thinking about match strategy. I really can’t wait to work with these amazing athletes.”

For children from 16 years and below, Tickets for the games would go for as low as $10 while adults will pay $20. There are also a limited number of VIP tables and reserved box seats, general admission seating and hospitality packages which includes food and beverage services would be offered by the New York Empire.
